OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY

NAVAL ROTC ALUMNI GROUP

"Best in the West...and the Rest"

ALUMNI GROUP CHARTER

Oregon State University NROTC Alumni Organization is created to support Midshipmen while they develop academically, physically and morally towards a goal of commissioning an officer in the United States Naval Service.

We are an independent body established as a group of private individuals and governed by an independent, voluntary, and active Alumni Advisory Committee. We are loosely affiliated with the Oregon State University Alumni Association.

The activities of this organization are voluntary -- there are no dues or legal organization. As individuals we support the military, the university, and the NROTC Unit.

However, opinions of this organization should not be construed as an official voice of the U.S. Naval Service, Oregon State University, or the Unit. Opinions expressed are solely those of this group or individual members.

OSU-NROTC Alumni Organization Mission Statement

The Oregon State-Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Alumni Organization has five major purposes:

1) To preserve the history of the OSU NROTC unit.

2) To provide a point of contact between the OSU NROTC alumni and the students and staff.

3) To fund a NROTC Scholarship and to advise the Professor of Naval Science in the awarding of such scholarship funds.

4) To make available information about OSU NROTC alumni regarding their military and post-military experiences in order serve as role models to NROTC students.

5) To facilitate face-to-face sessions between students and alumni in order to better understand current academic and military requirements and how those prepare students for careers as officers in the Naval Service as well as the post-military business world.

We will collaborate and work with the NROTC staff to identify areas that we are able to support the Unit towards this Vision. Our purpose is to find ways to support the midshipmen while at the NROTC Unit.

We also provide a mechanism to have alumni come together for fellowship and mutual support through our Newsletters, website, database, annual get-togethers/tailgaters, fundraising for Midshipman support and mentoring programs.

Our organization includes two governing bodies: the Alumni Advisory Committee and the Alumni Scholarship Board. Other subcommittees are established as needed.

Oregon State University NROTC Alumni Scholarship Board

The NROTC Alumni have established a scholarship fund for the Department of Naval Science at Oregon State University. This scholarship fund is intended to benefit students enrolled in the NROTC program. The guidelines and management of the scholarships are provided below.

The Alumni Scholarship Board will consist of up to five members of Alumni and the Commanding Officer or designee. The Chairman shall be an OSU NROTC Alumni and may be the Alumni Coordinator. The Commanding Officer, OSU NROTC is responsible for selection of candidates. The Funds for the Scholarship will come from the designated Scholarship Funds held by the OSU Foundation or other sources held by other organizations.

The Alumni scholarship board shall determine the number and amounts of scholarships available each year. The scholarships are typically awarded at the Spring awards ceremony.

The scholarship will provide a monetary award to be applied towards room and board or other school related expenses (such as tuition, fees and books). Applications may be submitted via the students NROTC advisor.

The guidelines for selecting the scholarship award recipient are as follows:

1) Only OSU NROTC scholarship/college programs students are eligible. The applicants may be in any class year, resident or non-resident but must be in good class standing.

2) Financial need is the primary consideration for selection.

3) Other considerations for the award are academic and aptitude performance as well as future potential

4) There is a preference for lower-level students such as Freshmen and Sophomores.

The Alumni Scholarship board will work with the NROTC Unit, the OSU foundation, and others, to raise funds for the endowed and spendable scholarship accounts.
